World War II was a unique time in American History. World War II represented the best and the worst that the world has to offer. The atrocities committed by the Axis forces were deplorable actions that would require an astonishing amount of coordination and teamwork on the part of the Allied forces. Hitler, with his insatiable desire to spread his vision of Arian supremacy across the world, resulted in the United States and their European Allies engaging in a War that the fate of the world depended on. As a result of the severity and high stakes nature of World War II the United States would be forced to cooperate with any and all resources available to them, even if it means collaborating with a different enemy, The Mafia. The Mafia was able to achieve this prolific infiltration of American society in part because of a mass exodus of mafioso from Sicily after a brutal crackdown by the Fascist regime. Before their emigration fr om Sicily the mafia contended itself at times as a governmental body that exists outside of the law, with sense of honor and with a code even if it be a bit twisted. As a result of this image some members of Sicilian society viewed the Mafia favorably, garnering them a mystical and romantic quality if you were lucky enough to not be involved in the unsavory nature of the organization. Mussolini sought to undercut this appeal of the Mafia, in a statement Benito said â€Å"Gentlemen, it is time that I showed the Mafia up to you...Let nobody speak of the nobility or chivalry of the Mafia, unless he really wishes to insult the whole of Sicily.† In conjunction with his statement Mussolinis crackdown ensued shortly thereafter bringing the likes of Charles â€Å"Lucky† Luciano, Joseph â€Å"Socks† Lanza, Vito Genovese, and many more to America. As a result of this mass prosecution of Mafiosi many members emigrated from Italy to America. This resulted in bolstering ra nks of crime families across the U.S. but in particular in New York. The Importance Of Self Esteem And Social Identity

There are a series of important steps in the development of one s self-concept, self-esteem and social identity. These steps begin from birth and continue into the adult years. Physical awareness starts from birth up until one year of age. Everyone is born with an internal sense of awareness, but it is only physical. For example, Infants who look in a mirror would not be able to tell that the image they see is themselves, instead they only recognize that the hand reaching out towards the mirror is theirs. Around 18 months children are aware that they are separate from others in the world. (Self-recognition). If a red spot is placed on an infant s nose, infants are able to recognize when looking in the mirror that the dot is on their nose and would touch the dot on themselves, not the mirror. Around ages two to three, infants can now refer to themselves using words such as â€Å"I†, or â€Å"Me†. Self-esteem also begins to develop around this age. Children begin to in ternalize standards and feelings of good and bad behavior. For example, they will respond more to â€Å"Good boy, or good girl†, and react more in hopes of receiving that kind of praise. By age four when children’s self-concepts start to emerge, they are often aware and proud to show off their skills and accomplishments. A child who mastered the art of referencing a fire truck as â€Å"red†, will start to show off their toy truck and say â€Å"red† to whomever they meet, or whoever is around.
